Job Description

A computer support specialist provides technical assistance, advice, and support. Support might include hardware, software solutions or both. Specialists must answer incoming support calls and use diagnostic programs to resolve the issue.

Many support specialists work in for company help desk or support services companies that provide support customers on a contract basis. Other support specialists work directly for a company that has an in house support team.

Technical support specialists are responsible for troubleshooting and providing assistance to computer users in their organization. These users can consist of company employees or customers who are using a product.

They are also responsible for maintenance of computer equipment. They have to troubleshoot and repair hardware and software problems and install additional systems as needed.

Additional tasks include answering support calls and using diagnostic programs to resolve these problems. Also they might have to write training manuals and teach users how to use new software.


Help desk technicians, deal with customer problems. They are responsible for keeping track of, and reporting persistent issues. Most support specialists start out in a help desk position.

Network and Computer Systems Administrators are responsible for designing, installing, and supporting local area and wide area networks (LAN, WAN). They provide support to system users and monitor the network for potential problems. They are also responsible for maintaining repairing network hardware and software, and make sure adequate network resources are available for users.
